PERSONALITY OVERVIEW

Clary is stubborn, sarcastic, caring and compassionate. All of these traits can be considered as either strengths or weaknesses depending on the situation. For Clary they are most often strengths. It’s her stubborn and sarcastic reactions that keep her strong while her caring and compassionate nature drives her towards her goals.

If anyone were to be described as stubborn and sarcastic it would first be seen in a negative light. They are hardly dazzling traits and yet they work together so well. Clay won’t let the world beat her down or falter in the face of the bazar, even after learning that her mother had lied to her for the last fifteen years she kept moving forward, pushing through the adversity of her birth. Her sarcasm assists and strengthens her stubborn tendencies. She’ll make her opinions known while twisting her words to show how ridiculous something is. It’s often how she talks sense into her best friend Simon and at times how she gets her way. Both tendencies were developed as a defense against the over protective; i.e. Clary’s mother. Her mother was protective for good reason but due to this environment she exemplifies these characteristics as two of her core traits. That’s not to say that Clary doesn’t know when she’s been beaten. Within the first chapter she realizes that there are things that she can’t explain in this new world and she simply turns and continues forward. She doesn’t like it and struggles to accept the things she can’t control but she won’t beat her head against a rock that won’t move. Instead, she focuses her energy elsewhere.

Clary’s compassion and caring nature is constantly evident and rooted deep within her character. The length she goes to for her mother and for Simon. The danger she puts herself in when protecting people. She’ll protect anyone, Down-Worlder or Human, because she believes that everyone should be given a chance. This passion gets Clary into trouble, it’s what pulls her into the world of the Shadow Hunters, having seen something that she shouldn’t have, but it’s one of her greatest qualities and it’s the part of her personality that stands out the most.

Clary was kept away from the world of the Shadow Hunters in order to protect her from their rules, their values and her father. After suddenly being thrust back into this world she ends up stumbling through, getting herself and others hurt, while trying to sort through all the sudden changes. She doesn’t know about the angel’s blood that runs through her or that her ability to draw is more than what it seems. This flaw, mixed with Clary’s stubbornness and compassion, creates disaster. Clary is willing to go to extreme, often reckless, lengths for her friends and family. She is constantly putting herself in danger, thus usually leaving the people who care for her extremely worried and exasperated. In order to save her best friend Simon, who was unfortunately turned into a rat, she goes into a Night Walkers layer and ends up starting a turf war between the Moon Children and the Night Walkers. Thanks to Luke, her mother’s best friend, this is eventually avoided but that doesn’t change Clary’s initial, thoughtless actions.

She is very similar to her mother when it comes to her passions and interests but also when it comes to her flaws. Clary is very dense. She doesn’t notice that her best friend Simon is in love with her until Jace jealously points it out. She doesn’t understand why Simon likes her: she’s thin and freckled and small. Not unattractive by any means but also not drop dead sexy. She can’t turn heads the way Isabelle can. This is one of the few places in Clary’s personality where her self-doubt shines. There are times that she questions herself but it’s only when it comes to her own abilities, features and actions that she feels so unsure about. Like most teenagers she’s trying to find her confidence and suddenly being thrust into the life of a Shadow Hunter doesn’t help.

Clary questions everything but doesn’t always take the time to stop and understand another’s situation. She cares about people but she’ll often interact with things that she feels is ‘wrong’ with arguments instead of calm rational discussions. This is the reason why it takes so long for her to acclimate to the Shadow Hunter culture. They believe that Down-Worlders should all be killed and that they are the superior race. They have strict rules and Clary considers most of them rather stupid. She’d been raised with an open mind and heart but it takes her a long time to really understand the Shadow Hunter world and subsequently those who live in it. This trait is born from a combination of her stubbornness and her innocence and it often creates conflict between Clary and others.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

What skills does your character bring to the situation?:
One of the most amazing things about Clary is that she’s real. She doesn’t hide things about herself and she follows her heart to do what she thinks is right. Clary will always face things head on. She doesn't like going around things and will think of the most direct way possible to do something. She sometimes over simplifies things but she’ll keep trying. She isn’t afraid to call people out on their shit or stand up for her friends. One of Clary’s most amazing things is that she’ll do anything for her friends.

These aren’t particularly skills, as they are traits but it’s something that Clary will bring with her anywhere she can go. For straight up skills she can’t do very much. She grew up in Brooklyn and has only recently been handling becoming a Shadow Hunter. She’s the sort of person who is stubborn enough to learn along the way and will lead others with her.

One skill that is noteworthy is her ability to see the world differently. It’s what makes her such a good artist. She sees things as they are and that’s how she chooses to draw them. She’s constantly looking at the world like it’s a picture, to see it as it is in those terms.

Explain how your character would react to the following:

- Discovering that their memories may have been tampered with:
Clary has had her memories tampered with in canon, by a Warlock named Magnus. It wasn’t the act that bothered her the most, it’s true that she felt like she lost a part of herself and throughout the series she tries to get that part back. What bothers her the most is the betrayal she feels when she learned that her mother was the one who kept things from her. She can handle almost anything if she feels supported by those around her.

When it comes to things she can’t control or things that have already happened that she can’t go back and change she gets angry. She tries to distract herself by fixing the problem in whatever why she can but that anger is still there. She isn’t the sort of person to physically lash out but she will yell and scream and claim that the world isn’t fair. Once all of those frustrations are out of her she’ll be able to calm down and refocus her attention. Clary is strong, she can get over most of her problems however it takes her time to adjust.

- Having to do physical labor to survive:
Clary has never had to do physical labor to survive. It isn’t that much of a problem, she’s young and can push herself when she needs to but she’s not particularly strong or well built. She’s thin and will most likely require help for most heavy lifting. Endurance is something that she’s better at but even then, she’s an artist not a jock. Without her shadow hunter abilities, she will not be able to do as much. That said, she has no problems asking for help when she’s having trouble.

- Having to share resources with others:
This will be awkward for Clary to get used too. She is an only child, as far as she knows, and she’s never had to really share. That said, if she doesn’t need something she’ll pass it along, she’s nice when it comes to survival and extreme situations but she’s also a bit entitled and will hope that there is someone who able to just make her a pizza that taste like it’s from New York City.

If she finds any art supplies… she won’t share. Even if someone claims to need paper for something else. Clary will be very reluctant parting with it. Drawing is sort of like how she keeps a diary. It keeps her sane and helps her refocus her thoughts.

- Being unable to leave the area:
With others around, being trapped in one area won’t feel so small to Clary. She’s lived in New York City all her life and she enjoys the cramped spaces and not going very far. It’s a little different in 6i because she won’t have the things that made the city feel like home. If she doesn’t think about it too much then she’ll be fine.

If she does think about it… well, Muppets Treasure island comes to mind with the song ‘Cabin Fever’. She’ll start talking to herself more and possibly answering herself. Sarcastic comments about how they’re suddenly in Red VS Blue. These are all small things but it’s how she deals with the stress of things that are ever present that she can’t control. Each one of these ticks will become a bit more noticeable over time, until someone calls her out on it and makes her talk about it.

- Doing without modern conveniences and technology and/or being around tech more advanced than they're used to:
This will be the hardest part for Clay. She’s a city girl and while Luke had taken her camping a few times as a kid, it isn’t the sort of thing that she’s overly familiar with. She can learn but the first month is going to be hell while she adjusts. Air conditioning and running water will be missed the most. Over time Clary will be able to adjust but it will take her time. She’ll also hate having to try and find the people that she’s looking for. I’m really looking forward to her getting annoyed at that and making references to the 60s and 70s.

- Being separated, possibly permanently, from loved ones and their previous life, including loss of powers, if applicable:
This is something that Clary is already starting to deal with. At the beginning of the season her mother is kidnapped and she’s trying to find her. Clary doesn’t have a big family. It’s her mother, herself and then Simon and Luke. She’ll miss them horribly but she isn’t the sort of person to believe that she won’t see them again. She doesn’t care how long it takes, she thinks she’ll be able to get back to them. It’ll mean that she has moments where she’s sad or out of sorts. She’ll get down on herself but often times when this happens she’ll tell herself to pull it together and get moving; often out loud.

POWERS & SPECIAL ABILITIES

THE SIGHT: Clary is able to easily see through most magical illusions and layers of glamour over reality. However her sight was blocked by her mother and the warlock Magnus Bane, so it’ll take some time and practice for Clary to see things as second nature. She currently has to focus.

NEPHILIM: Being Nephilim means that Clary has enhanced physical and mental abilities. This includes enhanced strength, agility, stamina, coordination, and many others which improve over time and practice. This is because of the blood of the angel Raziel. This is what makes a Shadow Hunter who they are and separates them from the Mundie’s or normal folk.

RUNIC MAGIC: Shadowhunters are able to apply runes on their skin that apply different affects. These Marks will kill a Mundie, someone without the blood of an angel running through their veins, but on a Shadow Hunter it gives varied effects such as enhanced sight or breathing under water. They do wear off over time but the mark stays on their skin, visible to those who can perceive magic.

ANGELIC BLOOD: This is something that makes her special and it’s due to her father’s, Valentine’s experiments. Clary has more angel blood in her veins than most Shadow Hunters. During her mother’s pregnancy with her she’d been given Ithuriel’s blood which created a link between Clary and the angel. Due to this link, Ithuriel would send Clary prophetic dreams as well as images of forgotten runes that the other Shadow Hunters know nothing about. These runes can do almost anything and Clary knows them by instinct more than training and memorization. She can also enhance the potency of common runes to make them more powerful than usual, simply because her blood is stronger. The shadowhunters need their stele’s to write runes so in the context of this game it will not be possible, not even as something that points can unlock. It’s also why I crossed out the above skill. In the show specifically, which had I decided to take Clary from, she doesn’t always need runes to do some things, like put her biscotti into a piece of paper, it isn’t really explained so I assume that she can accomplish small tasks like that if she tried. (Or anyone with her power set.)

USE OF HEAVENLY WEAPONS: All Nephilim are able to handle heavenly weapons and use their heavenly abilities. These are weapons made of adamas and forged by Iron Sisters, such as seraph blades. They usually look like glass but are stronger than an average blade. They are also more affective towards demons and other Down-Worlder species.
